To Show Your Face

Yesterday I was playing around with the blog design a little bit, trying to rearrange things and clean it up a some.  I changed my banner, my button, etc.  I still need to figure out what I want to add and delete and move around on the sidebars.  It's definitely a work in progress right now.

One thing I added over there on the left is an About section, except it doesn't actually link to anywhere, and I don't even like how it looks.  Think of it as a place holder for right now.  What I have been struggling with is whether or not to show my face on my blog.  Part of me would like to put myself out there and part of me likes just being somewhat anonymous in the Internet ether.  And honestly, I really don't photograph all that well.  I visit other blogs and I see that most people have their photo up, or it's in their button, or in their posts, and the bravest ones even do a vlog and post it for people to watch.  And their photos look good- stylish, confident, happy.  I fear I would look like a tired, frumpy mama, which I just might be, but if you don't see me, you can just continue to think I look fabulous, which is perfectly fine with me.

So, is it time?  Do I put myself up there?

Do you show your face?  Why or why not?

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. First of all, I love the new banner! I see where you're going with this- it seems more streamline. I love a clean look. As for putting yourself out there and posting your picture, I'm with you. I always hate my photos, but beyond that, am not one to take a million picks of myself so there's not that much to choose from. Anyway, I didn't for a long time- for that reason and because I thought it was unnecessary. But I've come to see it's a personal choice, but that can really set the mood for a blog. I think you're right- you can read confident & happy, get a sense of the person's style, but also, even their voice.

  2. You should :) I had the same concerns as you do. I am the NOT photogenic. Once I just picked a picture and went with it, I felt a lot better.

  3. I totally hate being photographed because I feel like I always have some kind of weird face going on. But I still put the occasional photo on my blog and have one up on the sidebar because I want people to be able to put a face with who is writing. It is definitely something that is difficult to overcome, and I'm still working on that. However, it gets easier and easier each time I do it! :)

  4. Totally do it! I like knowing the face behind the blog. And it doesn't have to be a fancy pic. Mine isn't, it's just one I took with my Mac. I didn't even put on makeup or do my hair properly.

  5. i vote for show your face!!!! it doesn't matter if you don't take a good picture. you get to choose the picture so use your favorite. plus you're beautiful inside and out.

btw, i do show my face. i think it helps people connect better- to be able to put a face and name with it. know what I mean?

  6. I like what you've done! I struggled with putting my face up on the blog-osphere as well. I initially worried that people would judged the way I looked as well, but then it occurred to me that people like to put a face to a writer. I realized that my favorite blogs, it's doesn't matter what they look like, I just like seeing them!

  7. Another vote for yes! It's nice to put a face with a name, and any pictures you use don't need to be fancy anyway. Just something that reflects you, however you are. Like Pam said, I think it helps people connect even more, and that goes for your customers too.

  8. Oops, forgot to add: I show my face because it was hard to do outfit posts without it! It sort of snowballed from there.

  9. I am not photogenic either, and it took me a long time to find a photo that I was happy with for my blog and some other sites that require an avatar. While it is not necessary, I agree with others that it can go a long way with helping readers, customers, etc. connect with you. It does not have to be anything fancy or professional.

  10. sooo I kinda think its cool to be the mysterious blogger and not show your face; however I couldn't do it because the purpose of my blog is to journal - and my journal has my family in it...and well, I'm in my family. haha. but it is kinda neat if you were mysterious! ha. I've thought about doing a mysterious person blog but - 2 blogs would be hard to keep up with. ha.

  12. Hello, there! I saw you were my newest follower and checked out your blog. I am your newest follower! Here are my two cents, for what it is worth: people feel more connected when they can see you, so you shouldn't worry about whether or not you are photogenic! If the lighting is good, and you look natural and pleasant, it will be a great picture. However, some blogs don't post a lot of pictures of themselves, and they still have a great following, because people go back for good content. I would say it is more a decision about what kind of blog you want to have. :)Good luck!

  13. Do what makes you feel comfortable. It took me about two years of blogging (so most of my blogging career) to feel right having my face up there. When I realized I needed to be in some Etsy photos I figured I might as well put my face on my blog, too. I still don't love doing it but realized it was sort of a necessary move for me. Just do what is right for you!
