Consistency.

 via

Did you see what happened?  Yesterday was Monday and there was NO POST.  I missed Monday, the most important day of the blogging week!  (Did you know I haven't missed a weekday post since the start of the new year?  I'm a little disappointed to have broken the streak.)

Anyway, no post yesterday.  My husband's boss came for dinner, and while all went well and the food was really good, most of yesterday was spent running to preschool, grocery shopping, putting everything away, and then doing the last-minute cleaning and clutter-hiding and food prep.  So, because I didn't write a post Sunday night like I usually do, I left myself open for the big no-blog-post-today letdown.  At least it was a letdown for me.

So of course that left me wondering: is consistency of a blog as far as posting is concerned a big deal to you?  Do you prefer it when a blog posts every day versus posting a few times a week versus posting a few times a month?

Personally, it doesn't bother me as long as the content is something I want to continue to read.  If I'm interested in the blog, then I'm excited when they post something new regardless of the gap in between posts, and when I'm not, then I start to wonder why I'm still following them.  I do like to know that a blogger is still interested in their blog- I want to see some kind of upkeep going on.  On the other hand, a blog that has many multiple posts a day kind of drives me crazy because I feel like it's really hard to keep up with reading a blog that does that.

And I suppose that is the argument for blogging quality versus quantity.  I actually think both are good: you can write brilliant posts but if you do so too sporadically, you may lose readers who are looking for more consistency, or conversely you can post garbage several times a day and your readers know you're just posting filler.  Neither extreme is really helpful to keeping your readers.

What do you think?  How do you like your blogs?

  1. I like my bloggers medium rare.. Ok. Just kidding. It sounded like steak.

I guess I prefer blogs that actually post a few times a week but if they don't then I don't really notice. In fact, I may just skip over them. I also skip over blogs that have the same theme every posting. Like.. all they do is features or promotes their business, or whatever. It's the same theme I lose interest.

With so many blogs to follow you aren't really capturing my interest by talking about the same thing all the time.

  2. I'm all about quality! A couple of times a week is good for me, especially if the posts are ones that I really want to read!

  3. I prefer quality, absolutely. I find that I don't usually have time to read most blogs every day, but rather a few times a week anyway, so even if they do post every day, I might not be able to read that frequently. From a blogger standpoint, I'm not sure it matters. I have gone through periods where I posted every single day, and then periods where I only posted a couple of times a week. It didn't seem to matter that much as far as the number of unique visitors go. If people like your blog, they will check in to see what you're up to even if you post less frequently.

  4. I prefer quality over quantity as well, and I find it hard to keep up with a blog that posts multiple times a day as well. I kinda still beat myself up if I miss posting on a day, but it does happen, cause, ya know, life happens. haha
No worries, if I like what I read I will keep on coming by, even if I don't comment every time. Hugs xxx

  5. I'm the same way. I don't really care how regularly a blogger posts (i.e. every monday or whatever) as long as the blog is still going. If it's a month between posts, I'll probably stop following because that's too infrequent for me. But between once a week and 6 times a week there's not a difference for me as long as the posts are good.

Exceptions: if the person regularly hosts a link-up and it's expected on a certain day - if that is missed, and I'd planned on linking up, I'll be a bit miffed.

  6. I enjoy reading your blog post, and several others, but I can't keep up with them all. I do think quality is more important than quantity and I understand that life happens, and sometimes posts don't written. As for my own blog, I am having a hard time finding things I think people want to read and I need to work on my picture taking skills quite a bit.

  7. I feel guilty when I take a week day off from blogging. But at the same time, I don't just want to post for the sake of posting. I've had to take the last two Mondays off because of crazy busy weekends. I'm sure my readers would rather wait til Tuesday than read whatever I would have thrown together last minute. Like you said...quality vs. quantity.

  8. I prefer a few times a week. I know people who post every day and have themed days. Mondays are for "x", Tuesdays are for "y", etc. While I like the continuity, I sometimes wonder if it's overkill. I find myself posting 2-4 times a week depending on what's going on. I just a 2 month "break" for a variety of reasons, and felt rather negligent, but am glad to be back on track again.

  9. Quality over quantity! If a blogger is trying too hard to post and it is obvious, the posts often get a little boring and I usually quit following them. I'll take a well-thought-out, interesting post any day!

Myself, I've been pretty bad at blogging consistency lately. My goal right now is to post 2x per week and I think that is reasonable for me at this time in my life. I'm trying! :)

  10. Great discussion! I often wonder this myself. I average about 3x per week, and although sometimes I'm able to make it most weekdays, I can never seem to do daily posts. When I switched to my new look I wanted to post every weekday, but I quickly saw that I'd compromise quality (and length of text) if I didn't focus on my posts one at a time. Maybe one day I'll have time to post more frequently, but until then quality is more important! I work during the day so I have to schedule posts, too, which makes it difficult.

Overall, I don't mind how often my favorite blogs post, though if it's not 1+ post per week, I can lose interest. If it's daily or more, I can't always keep up.

    Thanks for bringing this up!

  11. Honestly, sometimes I don't even notice when people take a day off. Having new and interesting content is so much more important than posting everyday. I can always tell when somebody forced a post just so they would have something to share, and it's usually a waste of time. Plus, sometimes we just need a break. My blog is the first thing to get put on the back burner when school takes over my life (like is it this week... again...) so I completely understand when other bloggers need a timeout.

  12. I'm with you. My daily reads are based on content I love, not how often posts come. I don't really notice when I don't see x number of posts. Sometimes I just have to end up clicking all as read if there is too many mediocre posts in my feed...

  13. there's definitely a happy medium! sometimes I have trouble keeping up with all of the prolific bloggers I follow, but I feel like I've waited my time if I read a post that's clearly filler, you know? (p.s. I promise I read this only today, after I wrote my post last Thursday! haha)
