Fitbit.

I spent the second half of December pretty much living in leggings and yoga pants and sweaters.  The husband had a lot of vacation days to use up, Greta was off from preschool from the 17th and Gus from kindergarten starting on the 24th.  Unless I was going grocery shopping and running serious errands (once a week) I was bumping around doing stuff around the house and enjoying my comfort.  Big mistake, given that when I went to put my jeans on again this past week they were feeling a little snug.  The moral of the story: don't wear stretchy pants exclusively for the three weeks surrounding Christmas.

One of my goals for the year is exercise.  It's something I really need to do but just haven't been able to get myself on top of.  I've been contemplating a gym membership, but I don't really want to spend the money on it because who knows how consistent I would be with it?  We have an elliptical in the basement but it's so cold down there I don't want to use it.  I have a million excuses and I just need to get over myself.

I was thinking it might be helpful to see kind of where I stand as far as fitness goes, so today I want to talk about the Fitbit.  As I am generally behind on everything new in the world lately, especially in the form of technology, the Fitbit is one of those things I keep hearing about around all the social media outlets.  I kept wondering what it is, but since things are fleeting in my brain lately, I generally would forget to look it up when I would think of it.  Then on New Year's eve we had some family over and several of them had Fitbit products so I finally got to see what it was.



If you are like me then you are also probably thinking, what the heck is it?  From the Fitbit website: "When it comes to reaching your fitness goals, steps are just the beginning. Fitbit tracks every part of your day—including activity, exercise, food, weight and sleep—to help you find your fit, stay motivated, and see how small steps make a big impact."  There are several different products from a belt clip to a wrist band to a wi-fi scale.  They can be synched to an app that helps record and monitor all your data and compiles it to let you know how you're doing.  I find the concept of an activity tracker completely interesting and would love to see where I stand on a fitness level, plus I'm ondering if I have a little machine tracking me and telling me I didn't do so well today if it would push me to do better the next day.

So what I'd like to know from you out there reading, is if you have one, which one you have, how you use it, and if you like it.  Give me all the dirty details so I can be on my way to determining if this would be a good choice for me.

  1. I don't have a Fitbit, I'm curious though. But every time I see the prices I back off. I'm probably not going to get one. I have an app on my phone which tracks my steps based on it's built in GPS. Can I tell you I use to be a member of FOUR different gyms? Yeah, it's really hard for me to visit a gym regularly and lose all that money (again with the money!) I kinda like the routine I have now going my walk/jog and doing weights at home. Not to say I'll never join a gym again but it has to be close, affordable - sometimes it's just nice to have a place to GO to ya know?

  2. I have the FitBit Zip and I love it. It definitely shows how little I walk though...the only time I can get to 10k steps is when I have gone running for 2.5-3 miles in the morning. I'm hesitant about the wrist ones because I move my hands so much when I talk, and in general, so I feel I'd be registering steps when I wasn't walking, and it would look like I'd done more than I have.

    Also FitBit is a great company - I lost the actual FitBit once as it fell out of the sleeve when I was walking around town, and I emailed them letting them know. They shipped me a whole new one for free.

  3. hmmmm, that would be interesting, but since I have enough data to track in my life, I'm not sure I would use this item. but, just like you, I have spent way too much time in comfy stretch pants, and it shows. lol

  4. I don't have a fit bit, but I do know that there are lots of tracking options out there that probably cost a lot less. For a while, during a fitness challenge I was taking part in at school, I used the app My Fitness Pal and a regular old pedometer that I bought at Target. I was able to track water intake, food and calories, exercise, weight lifting, steps, etc. I had to input most of it, but it was a good way to track everything. I do know people that do use the fitbit and love it though I just don't know if I could pay that much money for it. The one thing that I do find interesting is that it tracks sleep-- that might actually be useful to me since I have weird sleeping patterns it seems sometimes. But, does that mean that I have to wear the thing 24/7? That's a little weird to me.

  5. I have a fitbit one and really like it. I lost it for a little while and noticed a difference because what I like about it is it makes me aware. Makes me aware if i'm not moving enough or moving a lot. I use My Fitness Pal to input meals and connected the two so that I know exactly where I stand every day. I don't always listen, but at least I'm aware of when I'm going over. ;) Also I think the app has added new features recently that make it easier to input food, but I'm not sure.

  6. See- that's what I think I need to is the awareness of it all. Like, I know if I've had a not particularly active day, but I'm wondering if it would help me to see the numbers. Thanks for chiming in!

  7. Yea- you do wear it when you sleep. Some of them even have a vibrating alarm to wake you up at a shallow point of sleep so you wake less groggy. The money is a huge thing, but then I rationalize it with that if I'm going to use it all the time for a lifestyle change then maybe it's worth it- like investing in a good pair of shoes. I think I need to do a little more research into it.

  8. I know what you mean about having data to track! That's kind of why I like the idea of this because it does a lot of it for you. I love my leggings for at home, but they just allow to much "wiggle room". :)

  9. That's good to know about their customer service! I was thinking about the wrist band, but I see what you mean about talking with your hands. So maybe the belt one is a better choice.

  10. I know- it's the idea of having to go to a place and be accountable to it, I kind of like that part of it. Other people doing it too- that's also nice. I like yoga classes and all that stuff, but in general I'm too lazy to drag myself out to it, especially when it's cold. I guess I just need to step up my game.

  12. That might creep me out! I'm not sure I'd be able to handle having that attached to me all of the time. On the other hand, you're right. If you look at it like a lifestyle change, then it definitely would be a good investment. I also noticed that they come in different pretty colors (read the same color as my mint watch) instead of just black like I thought. Uh oh.....

  13. I put mine on my bra so I don't lose it again lol. Also the Zip is the cheaper one and doesn't have anything to track your sleep etc. - it's basically just for steps.
