I Need Something To Read.

I've gotten away from reading a bit while working through the holiday season. There just wasn't time to get engrossed in a book, and the energy to even start anything was just not there.  But in the new year, with a few slower months work-wise, I'd like to pick up some titles and get back into it.  I love the reading challenge list from Modern Mrs. Darcy because I love lists and being totally organized.  However, I know I won't be able to completely stick with it, and I probably won't try overly hard to, but I love having a list of suggestions to run with. (Although reading from a different genre and one originally written in a different language probably won't make my list.  I'm a creature of habit, and when I want to read, I want to enjoy it.)

If you have suggestions, or a book that falls into one of those categories, I would love to hear it, as I'm constantly out of the "must read" book loop.  I've heard I have to read Gone Girl, and I just got ahold of last month's book club book, Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng, which apparently is so popular I could only get it from the library weeks after I put it on hold.  Luckily I had to miss book club so I didn't hear the discussion on it, and hopefully this month's new and popular pick, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, comes a little faster.

So please, let me know what you've been reading, or a book you've loved, or a book I have have have to read!  I will take any and all suggestions.

  1. Gone Girl is a MUST. I just read All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner and loved it, as well as Yes Please by Amy Poehler.

  2. Thanks! I read Tina Fey's book, and I just put the Amy Poehler one on hold at the library. Interested to check out the rest!

See, I really wanted to read Gone Girl, but then somebody spoiled it for me. UGH. I fell off the reading bandwagon, too, and have been meaning to get back on. I know it's not a book, but National Geographic is always very interesting and worthy of my time. Maybe that can get us back on the ball.

This book isn't new, but it's one of my all-time favorites: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. It's Anne Bronte's better novel and is full of old time-y drama and romance. And yet it's also a great social commentary on women and their place in society, so it's not just scandals. :-)

  5. I know bits and pieces of the story but I don't know the whole thing, so I will probably give it a try. And thanks for the suggestion- I'll have to go look that one up!

  6. After a couple years of not reading very much, I was able to do a lot more reading last year. I've read a few books already this month, but I'm hoping to expand my reading list, since I mostly read middle grade and YA. I'd love to read novels by international authors, for instance. So far this month, I've read the last couple Harry Potters and "Orphan Train." (Which was pretty decent. I didn't love it, but I definitely liked it.) "Gone Girl" was good, too. My book club just picked "The Paris Wife" for our next meeting, and a Sherman Alexie book for our meeting in March. Have you ever read anything by John Irving? "A Prayer for Owen Meany" is my favorite book. I loved Annie Proulx's "The Shipping News," too.

  7. My husband really liked "The Shipping News"- it may still be kicking around here somewhere. I'm going to check out some of your other picks- it's good to have a broad range of recommendations.
